FAQs

Does Wingman need internet?

1

No internet needed. Wingman works in Airplane Mode over local Wi-Fi — just turn on Airplane Mode, then re-enable Wi-Fi. No SIM card or mobile data required.

Is Wingman free?

2

Yes, Wingman is free to download. A Wingman Plus subscription unlocks unlimited chats. You can try the app for free before deciding.

Which devices does it support?

3

Wingman runs on iPhone with iOS 16 or later.

How do I start a chat with someone on my flight?

4

Open Wingman, set up your display name and seat number, then go to Discover. You'll see nearby passengers who are also using the app. Tap their name to send an invite — if they accept, your chat opens.

Is Wingman safe to use?

5

Yes. You only connect with people who are physically nearby and also using the app. No one can message you without sending an invite first — you choose who to accept. You can block or report any user directly from the chat.

What happens to my messages after the flight?

6

Your messages stay on your device until you delete them. Nothing is stored on our servers. You can delete individual chats or your entire history from within the app at any time.

Can I use it outside a plane?

7

Wingman is currently designed for flights. It works anywhere you have a local Wi-Fi network and nearby users on the app.

What is the Route Board?

8

The Route Board is a shared space where passengers on the same route can post messages visible to other Wingman users on that flight. Unlike private chats, Route Board posts are public within the app. You can use it to introduce yourself, ask for travel tips, or just say hello to everyone on board.

Does it drain my battery?

9

No. Wingman uses optimised discovery that adapts to conditions and stays energy-efficient.

Is my chat private?

10

Yes. Messages travel directly between devices and are never uploaded to our servers. Chats are stored locally on your device and can be deleted at any time within the app. If you have iCloud enabled, Apple may back up your local data as part of standard iOS backups.

Why can’t I see everyone on my flight?

11

Connectivity depends on a mix of factors, and sometimes a nearby device just won't "handshake" with another. Common reasons include:

  • Distance: They might be just outside the 15-row sweet spot.

  • Permissions: They may have declined the "Local Network" or "Bluetooth" prompt when first opening the app.

  • Interference: Having a Personal Hotspot or VPN turned on can sometimes block the connection.

  • Sleeping Phones: If a phone is locked or in Low Power Mode, it might "go dark" to save battery.

  • Software: Sometimes very old iOS versions don't play nice with newer ones.

How far does the connection reach?

12

Think of Wingman like passing a note in class—it only goes as far as you can reach. Usually, that’s about 15 rows.

How do I cancel my subscription?

13

Subscriptions are managed through Apple. Go to iOS Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions → Wingman to cancel at any time.

How can I be sure Wingman works for my phone?

14

Since every flight and every iPhone is a little different, we recommend you test it out with your favourite travel partner before you head to the airport! Try it while you're hanging out at home or waiting at the gate to make sure your settings are dialled in. To see if it's a good fit for your travel style, you can use our 7-day free trial of Wingman Plus to explore all the features during your next trip.

Can I use Wingman during takeoff and landing?

15

While Wingman is safe to use, we strongly recommend following the specific instructions provided by your flight crew. If the announcement says to put devices away or switch them off during takeoff and landing, please prioritise their safety guidance and wait until you're at a safe altitude to start chatting!
